Memorable Moment #2: Duel in the Desert: International Show Jumpers and National Reined Cow Horse Association Riders Switch Saddles at 2015 FEI World Cup™ Finals in Las Vegas
During the Saturday evening performance at the 2015 Finals
Las Vegas, Nevada • Thomas & Mack Center -
As we continue our trips down memory lane with highlights from the previous FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas, we want to relive one of the unprecedented events, the “Duel in the Desert.”
During the Saturday evening performance at the 2015 Finals, three show jumping stars and three National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) riders switched roles in the “Duel in the Desert!” Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Beezie Madden, future (2016) Olympian Lucy Davis, and 2012 Olympic individual Gold medalist Steve Guerdat (on the night before he would win his first FEI World Cup championship!), hopped in western saddles and rode cow horses, while NRCHA riders Tucker Robinson, Zane Davis and Brandon Buttars rode jumper horses in English saddles and took to a jumper course.
In the saddle and discipline switch, each show jumper executed a sliding stop and a spin, cut a cow and did a short fence work run, and each cowboy rode a jumper course of seven obstacles. The crowd cheered enthusiastically for their favorites and a good time was had by all. Each jumper rider was paired with a cow horse rider: Steve Guerdat with Brandon Buttars, Tucker Robinson with Lucy Davis, and Zane Davis with Beezie Madden.
In the end, Guerdat and Buttars emerged victorious as determined partly by the judges and partly by which team got the most enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. It was a special moment the crowd will never forget and it makes one wonder what surprises are in store when the Finals return to Las Vegas in just three short months, April 15-19!
